Barcode › Scan barcodes
Scan barcodes with your phone or a USB scanner
How to read barcodes into your item list with a phone camera or a USB scanner, what to do with unknown codes, and fixes when the camera does not read.
Three ways to read barcodes
- Phone camera: open Scan, press Start camera and allow camera access. Point at the barcode inside the green box. It works in Chrome and Edge on Android and on most newer phones; on others the tool loads a reader that works in the browser.
- USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner: it types the code like a keyboard and presses Enter. Click the box Scanner or typed code once and scan; each scan adds one.
- Typing: when a barcode is torn, type the number printed under it and press Add.
What happens after a scan
Each scan adds 1 to that code in the list; scanning the same code again counts it again (the camera waits a moment so one barcode is not counted many times). Codes already on your items show the item name. Unknown codes show Not in your items: press Save as new item, type the name and rate, and the code is saved with the new item in My data, so billing., the Nivesh Sahayak App and the stock register know it too.
Uses in a small business
- Putting new stock into your item list: scan the maker's barcode on each new product once and save it as an item. From then on the item is found by its barcode.
- Re-printing labels: scan items whose labels are torn, then press Print labels for these.
- Counting stock: scan every piece on a shelf, then Download Excel (CSV) for the counts, and type them into Count stock on stock.niveshsahayak.in.
If the camera does not read
- Allow camera access for this site in the browser's settings, and close other apps using the camera.
- Hold the phone 10 to 20 cm away, steady, with light on the label and no glare.
- Very small or curved barcodes are hard for phone cameras; a USB scanner reads them much better.
- The camera runs only while the Scan section is open. Nothing from the camera is saved or sent anywhere.
