Barcode label sizes: A4 sheets and label rolls

Which label sheet or roll to buy, the common sizes, and what a label for your shop or your packed products should show.

Two ways to print labels

Common A4 label sheets

21 (3 × 7)63.5 × 38.1 mmBoxes and cartons
14 (2 × 7)99.1 × 38.1 mmLarger cartons, business name on each label

Makers differ by a millimetre or two in margins. The sizes are printed on the sheet's pack; if yours differ, choose My own sizes and type the label width and height, labels across and down, the top and left margin and the gaps.

Common label printer sizes

50 × 25 mm and 38 × 25 mm are the most common for shop items, 2 × 1 inch (50.8 × 25.4 mm) on printers sold with US settings, and 100 × 50 mm for cartons and shipping. Choose the same size in the tool and in your printer's settings.

What to put on a label

Packed goods have more rules. A pre-packed commodity sold in retail must carry declarations under rule 6 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, such as the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, the common name of the product, net quantity, the month and year of manufacture, the retail sale price (MRP) and consumer care details. The rules were amended in 2022 and 2023, and changes keep coming, so check the current text on consumeraffairs.nic.in or with your Legal Metrology office. A small price sticker from this tool does not replace those declarations.
